On women’s cricket

The ICC T20 Women’s World Cup officially kicks off tomorrow. The problem is – and I risk sounding politically incorrect here – no one cares. I’ve not met a single woman who knows or cares about the women’s cricket teams. It might be flimsy to base my assumption on that small anecdotal sample, but given that I don’t see the media scamper for rights to women’s cricket, surely there cannot be much interest? I am not saying that cricket should be a male bastion but simply pointing out that a separate tournament with just gender as the differentiator cannot be sustained. What we probably need then is tennis’ equivalent of mixed-doubles?

At least they are doing much better than their male counterparts. Perhaps people will eventually get tired of watching the mens team get kicked out of WCups in the early stages and start watching the women play.
  • Mixed doubles - have seen charity matches played as mixed but the different strengths (physical strength that is) of the protagonists would make a men v women game a mis-match at international level.

But cricket is more than about brute strength. If, like me, you'd rather watch the elegant skills of a Jayawardene than the brute strength of some of the other men, then women's cricket has much to offer.

Watch Sarah Taylor, England opener, and you could be watching a coaching manual replay. T20 is fun but to see the girls at their best a F50 is the format.

And let them have the parallel tournament - as a mere male I'm all for equality with the guys. Just a shame they won't get paid a cent for their troubles.
